Matthew Oakley, director of WPI Economics, was joined by WPI Strategy’s Nick Faith and Sean Worth in presenting their research and public policy recommendations at the Homes for North Symposium on 23rd June 2017.
The event, entitled: “Symposium: the half a million homes challenge”, was centred around policy debates regarding the Northern Powerhouse, funding, housing, infrastructure and skills and hosted speakers from the Homes for the North, Transport for the North, Saffer Cooper, Gentoo Group, Liverpool Mutual Homes, Bolton at Home and more.
The team outlined both the economic ramifications of southward-migration (the brain drain) and how a reversal (a brain gain) could be achieved. This was alongside an analysis of the new political landscape and the importance of political communication in addressing the northern housing situation.
