Brain Gain: The Role of Homes and Place Making in Attracting Graduates to the North of England

Published: April 2017

Homes for the North commissioned WPI Economics to assess the impact of the ‘Brain Drain’ from the Northern Powerhouse regions, and to better understand what steps should be taken to ensure a more balanced growth across the north and south, specifically in regards to ensuring highly-qualified graduates live and work in the north of the country.

This report interrogates the reasons recent and early-career graduates provide for their move between the north and south of England. It examines the implications of the qualifications and skills deficit, and offers recommendations for local and central government, local business, housing providers, and other stakeholders to help bolster the economic trajectory of the Northern Powerhouse regions, turning the ‘Brain Drain’ into a ‘Brain Gain’.
