Covid Recovery Commission: ‘Levelling Up Communities’

Published: October 2020

The Covid Recovery Commission has launched its first report, ‘Levelling Up Communities’, for which WPI Economics conducted the research. This new research presents the impact of COVID-19 on communities across the UK, showing growing inequality in the UK’s most deprived areas.

The report calls for the Government to define what it means by ‘levelling up’ due to new research suggesting that solely focusing on policy and funding on broad geographic areas will not create opportunities for people living in some of the most deprived areas. Instead, a people-focused approach to levelling up is needed to help tackle growing inequalities.

Additionally, WPI Economics has developed an interactive map on behalf of the Covid Recovery Commission, to explore levels of deprivation across the UK alongside the economic output of an area.

The report can be found on the Commission’s website here.
