Government adopts SMC’s New Poverty Measure as experimental statistic

Published: July 2019

The DWP has announced it will be using the measure proposed by the Social Metrics Commission’s report. The measure takes into account a wide range of information, such as the ‘inescapable costs’ of childcare and costs associated with disability, and the number of people who are just above the poverty threshold, with the aim of providing a more detailed picture of poverty in the UK. WPI Economics led the Secretariat and the Technical team for the SMC.
