Published: January 2020

This report examines the potential for cellular-connected drones to bring wide-ranging societal and economic benefits to the UK in the context of an updated regulatory environment. When connected to mobile networks, drones can be used beyond the pilot’s line of sight, vastly expanding possibilities for use. Drones can be – and to an extent, already are – used for a range of beneficial uses, from delivery of medical supplies to remote areas to aiding emergency response in the fire brigade; two of a number of case studies examined in the report. Cellular-connected drones: The benefits to society of regulated drone use presents new polling evidence, demonstrating that when it comes to uses with clear benefits, with appropriate security, monitoring and safety measures, public attitudes towards drone use are positive, highlighting the importance of addressing the regulatory environment when looking to broaden the scope for drone usage.
