A new approach to poverty measurement in the UK

WPI Economics provided technical and policy support to the Social Metrics Commission as it worked to develop a new approach to poverty measurement in the UK.

This work takes in to account the depth and persistence of poverty, as well as understanding a range of factors that might influence their wider lived experience of poverty. Additionally, this rigorous study measures poverty for various family types to demonstrate how poverty in the UK varies between retired, working and workless families. This new framework can be used to understand more about the nature of poverty, the lived experience of those families in poverty and how poverty might be tackled.

The measure was launched in September 2018 and welcomed across the political spectrum, as well as by independent bodies such as the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and the Office for National Statistics.
